Jim Savill already had 17 years of Volleyball experience before he arrived in Barrie. His resume included OVA Certified University Referee. High school girls volleyball coach. Organizer of a men’s Provincial B volleyball team. A Regional Volleyball Official. A National Candidate where he had the opportunity to officiate the Canadian Olympic men’s team in a game against the Japanese men’s team at a CanAm competition in Edmonton. In 1991 he came to Barrie and immediately got involved in local, and Ontario Volleyball Association officiating. He worked at the elementary, high school, and college level. He has held numerous refereeing clinics in the Barrie area and developed several coaches over the same period. Savill has assigned volleyball officials in Barrie, Bracebridge, Gravenhurst, Parry Sound, and Huntsville. In 1994, Savill was the motivating force in developing the Georgian Cubs Volleyball Club beginning with two teams that season. The club grew to 21 by 2001, in Barrie, Orillia, and Collingwood. Jim and the Cubs organization insisted on providing certified OVA coaches to ensure the young volleyball players had the best possible training. The Cubs have won numerous tournaments, Provincial, and National championships at all levels. Savill represented Innisdale High School as the teams’ referee, at the1994 ISF World Championships in France. In the 1996 championships in Komarno, Slovaki, he was assigned as second referee in the women’s final. Seeing all the young players that he helped develop return to Barrie to get involved in the sport as coaches, referees and contributing members of the community are proud moments for Savill.

Barrie Advance Article – Hall Of Fame Recognizes Volunteers

To many hundreds of hockey and softball players in Barrie, Ralph Webb’s face is as familiar as that of any coach or manager they may have had. Webb has served as a trainer, assistant trainer and equipment manager for hockey and softball/slo-pitch teams for more than 30 years in Barrie. Although at times he’s been given a small honorarium from teams that he has helped out, the vast majority of his work has been as a volunteer:

The Barrie native started out with the Barrie Flyers in 1970. He was with the team when they won the 1974 Allan Cup. Soon after, he took a volunteer spot with the Barrie Colts Junior B hockey team and served as one of the team’s most dedicated volunteers. He watched them graduate from junior B to provincial Junior A to the present day Ontario Hockey League team. One of his fondest memories of the past quarter century was the Colts’ Sutherland Cup Championship in 1992/93.

When the Colts moved into the Major Junior ranks, Webb became an assistant trainer with the club. During the summer months, in the 1970s and ’80s, Webb was trainer with softball and slo-pitch teams. He was also with the Tornado Junior B Lacrosse team that won the 2003 Founders Cup, He was, however, best known for his years on the bench with the Colts. In fact, it’s tough for many old hockey fans to imagine a Colts bench without Webb’s face at the end. He became a regular at hockey games in the Barrie Arena during the hey¬day of Senior and Junior hockey in the 1950s and ’60s. He and wife Fran have seen every hockey notable that has played in this city over the past 50 years. Webb’s dream was to be a part of a Major Junior franchise. His involvement with the Colts OHL team made that dream come true.

In 1995 Webb was named coach/official of the year, by the Barrie Sports Hall of Fame, for his volun¬teer work with the Barrie Flyers and the Barrie Colts hockey teams. Webb has a large collection of hockey sticks that are signed by the players he has served. Many of them will be pleased to see him receive this award.

John Chalmers was an accomplished athlete in his youth, after his playing day ended it was a natural transition to coaching. He has been a volunteer coach with the Barrie Soccer Club for the past 15 years. Like most volunteers his involvement began with the coaching of his children at the house league level and progressing to all star and then to Rep Level. His teams, always competitive, improved year after year reaching the highest level of youth play in the Ontario Youth Soccer League in 2006. The team reached the Ontario Cup semi finals – the highest level achieved by a Barrie team at that time. John then continued with the core group of this team into the competitive world of women’s soccer joining the Ontario Women’s Soccer League.

In 2010, Chalmers’ continued dedication to the talented young women paid dividends. The team rose from the Regional level to the Provincial level and became the #1 ranked women’s team in the Ontario Women’s Soccer League (OWSL). The team went on to win the Ontario Cup. This was a first for a Barrie soccer team, male or female. It was also the first time that a Barrie team qualified to represent Ontario at the Canadian Women’s National Club Championships.

Other nominees for the 2010 Coach/Team Official of the Year were:

Nicholas Cryer started coaching wrestling in Barrie in 2003. He does most of his coaching at the Kempenfelt Bay wrestling club and with the Bear Creek High School team. Since 2003 he has help coached five individuals that have gone on to be members of Team Canada. His High school teams have won the Georgian Bay Secondary School Association team championships twice. Cryer’s students captured 15 OFSAA medals including 3 Gold. Twelve of his high school athletes have gone on to compete at the University level or higher. Many of Cryer’s wrestlers have also participated in both Provincial and National competitions. Overall they have captured 30 Provincial Medals, including 13 Gold and 16 National Championship Medals, including 6 Gold. Cryer was named Coach of Team Ontario and helped the team to a first place finish at the Sparta Cup in Puerto Rico. As head coach of the Kempenfelt club, Cryer is extremely proud that three out of four of this year’s top athletes at the National Training Center (Brock University) were former wrestlers of the Kempenfelt club. This summer one athlete from the Kempenfelt club is going to Mexico for the Pan American Games and another will be in Hungary for the World Championships.

Joe Denes participated at a national level as a decathlete and is a former Olympic bobsled competitor. The experience he gained he now passes on to those he coaches. Denes has been the track and field head coach at Innisdale Secondary School since 2001, he has coached nine OFSAA medalists and 32 OFSAA finalists. In 2010, Denes joined the South Simcoe Dufferin Track and Field Club as Combined Events Coach. He also gives his time as a basketball coach with the Barrie Royals Basketball Club. Denes is an associate coach with the Innnisdale Secondary School basketball team and a hockey coach with the Oro Minor Hockey Association. 2010 was a successful year for Joe Denes and the athletes that he has coached. His Innisdale Secondary School Senior Girls Track Team won the 2010/2011 OFSAA overall team Championship. The Innisdale basketball team were Georgian Bay finalists. Thanks to the efforts of Joe Denes there are currently at least five nationally ranked athletes that say thank you to him for his efforts.

Alexandra Paul and Mitchell Islam have only been together as a figure skating dance team since February 2009. They have had tremendous results both Nationally and Internationally. During their first few months, as a new team, they entered the Minto Summer Skate competition. They edged out the reigning Junior champions of Canada in the Free Dance and won the competition overall. This earned them an invitation to participate in a Grand Prix event in Poland. They finished a very strong fourth just less than one point shy of third. Their strong showing allowed them to skate in a second competition in Turkey where they placed a respectable fifth.

Coached by David Islam (Mitchell’s father) Kelly Johnson, Pavol Porac and Tyler Myles of the Mariposa School. Paul and Islam entered their first Canadian championship as a team and won the Junior Dance Championship of Canada. They received a BMO Possibility Award – a training grant for their amazing programs at Canadians. They were named to the Junior World team and headed for The Hague. Their ambition was to finish in the top five. They exceeded that goal by making the podium to be presented with the 2010 Junior World’s Ice Dance Silver medal. This was a huge accomplishment for a team that had barely been together a year. In the fall of 2010 they finished a commendable fourth at Skate Canada in their first senior event as a team. Rumble was drafted 9th overall by Kitchener in the 1986 OHL draft. He went on to have three great years with the Rangers. In his final season he helped the Rangers finish first in the league. He was also selected to the first team OHL all-star defenseman position.

In the 1987 NHL Entry Draft he was drafted 20th overall by the Philadelphia Flyers. After three years with Philly’s AHL Hershey Bears, being awarded the Bears’ Best Defenceman and the Top +/- Player in ’91, Rumble was selected in the 1992 NHL Expansion Draft as the Ottawa Senators’ second defenseman pick. He played two seasons with Ottawa but the fledgling Senators were struggling so Rumble found himself back in the minors with the Prince Edward Island Senators. In the 94/95 AHL season, with the PEI Senators, he led the league with a +45 and a Second All-Star team selection. Philadelphia reacquired Rumble in 1995. In 1997, playing for the Philadelphia AHL team he was awarded the Eddie Shore trophy as the AHL’s Best Defenceman and was chosen as a First Team All-Star.

He played one season, In 1997, for the Mannheim Eagles in the German and Euro Leagues. Rumble returned to America in 1998 and for the next seven years he continued to share ice times with NHL, AHL and IHL teams. Overall, his 614 AHL games netted him 77 goals and 317 assists for 394 points. His NHL totals with four teams (Philadelphia, Ottawa, St. Louis and Tampa Bay) include 193 games resulting in 10 goals and 26 assists for 36 points.

After pursuing his craft throughout North America he was acquired by Jay Feaster and the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2002. He was with the Tampa organization when they won the Stanley Cup in 2004. With his name engraved on the Stanley Cup he brought it to Barrie where the celebrations resulted in a $25,000.00 donation to the Royal Victoria Hospital. Rumble played his final season with the Springfield Falcons of the American Hockey League where he took on the role of assistant coach. In 2007, he joined the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL as an assistant coach. In July 2008, the Tampa Bay Lightning named Rumble Head Coach of their AHL affiliate Norfolk Admirals.

Kate Wilson was the founder and Head Coach of the Barrie Rowing Club, which she formed during the winter of 1988. She led a group which established a constitution, acquired equipment, found a suitable location, developed a program, and conducted a community awareness and membership drive. By early summer of 1988, the fledgling Barrie Rowing Club had 65 members, two nationally certified coaches, four rowing shells, a coach boat, and a temporary boathouse/storage facility. Wilson continued as both Head Coach and President in 1989, overseeing an increase in the club’s membership to 100, an increase in its nationally certified coaching staff from two to nine, and the addition of two more rowing shells. The youth program increased the club’s membership from a dozen high school students to more than thirty. Wilson relinquished the President’s duties in 1990 in order to concentrate on her role as Head Coach. She developed the “buddy system” of coaching to allow novice coaches to learn from more experienced ones. This is consistent with the club’s co-operative learning style of operation. The competitive rowing program was expanded in 1990, and four young rowers competed in the Ontario Summer Games. Barrie Rowing Club crews have competed with distinction at regional and provincial regattas, even winning medals at the famed Henley Regatta. Through only three short years of operation, the Barrie Rowing Club now competes successfully against the established Argonaut, Hanlon and Don Rowing Clubs. The Club’s profile was expanded during 1990 when Wilson organized a National Masters (over 27) Sculling Camp at the Kempenfelt Conference Centre. A founding principle of the club was the provision of accessible rowing facilities to all citizens of Barrie, and the recognition of the importance of recreational rowers, in addition to the competitive ones. Wilson announced plans to expand the current program to include adaptive rowing for the disabled and for “at risk” (disadvantaged) youth. Kate Wilson has worked very hard to ensure safety and to encourage the development and achievement of the personal goals of all the rowers and coaches she works with. Without her, there would be no Barrie Rowing Club. Her contacts and technical expertise have provided opportunities for rowers that would normally be available only at larger rowing clubs, and she continues to provide a fun, co-operative program for rowers of all levels and goals.
