The Jean McCann Unsung Hero Award

The Jean McCann Unsung Hero’s Award will be presented annually to an individual who quietly goes about giving their time and efforts to others, simply for the love and passion of sport. In doing so, they make our community a better place, which is certainly reflective of the namesake of the award, Mrs Jean McCann. The Board of Directors will select the recipient each year. The recipient’s name & year is engraved on a plaque and a Certificate of Recognition is presented to the recipient as a memento from the Barrie Sports Hall of Fame Society

Athlete of the Year

The Amateur Athlete of the Year is selected by a secret ballot of the Barrie Sports Hall of Fame Society’s Lifetime Voting Members. A list of qualified candidates are presented by the Selection Committee from nominations received from the public. Any Barrie athlete deemed to have attained an outstanding level of achievement in any field of sport during the previous year is eligible for the award subject to the following conditions: The athlete(s) must be considered a permanent resident of Barrie. The Athlete(s) may have performed outside of Barrie, as long as the athlete is still considered to be a Barrie resident by the Society. An athlete may also be considered if he/she competes for a Barrie team, Barrie School, Barrie Association or if it can be documented that he/she was viewed by the province or nation as being from Barrie, and thereby have conferred honor upon Barrie. To be considered for this award, an athlete must be an amateur. The qualifications for Athlete of the Year will allow for logical units of two or more to be recognized as a single unit where the actions of one are dependent on the other (i.e. a skating pair, rowing pair, tennis doubles). The recipient is presented the Greg Johnston/ Shayne Corson Trophy. A plate showing the athlete’s name, the participating sport and the year is added to the trophy. A Certificate of Recognition is also presented to the recipient as a memento from the Barrie Sports Hall of Fame Society.

The Coach / Team Official of the Year

The coach/ team official of the year is selected by a secret ballot of the Barrie Sports Hall of Fame Society’s Lifetime Voting Members. A list of qualified candidates are presented by the Selection Committee from nominations received from the public. Any Barrie coach or team official deemed to have attained an outstanding level of achievement, or to have made an outstanding contribution in any field of sport, or who has devoted his/her time to the encouragement of fair play and sportsmanship, is eligible for the award subject to the following conditions. The coach/team official must live or contribute to their sport within the city of Barrie. The coach or team official’s contribution must be essentially voluntary in nature, as determined by the Society. This award is presented annually for accomplishments from the previous year. It however can also recognize the body of the individual’s contributions over a period of time The recipient is presented the Barrie Sports Hall of Fame Society’s Memorial Trophy to which a plate is added indicating the year and the recipient’s name. A certificate of Recognition is also presented as a memento from the Barrie Sports Hall of Fame Society.

Honour Roll of Outstanding Teams

Paragraph 9 of Section V1 of the constitution, states that teams may not be inducted into the Barrie Sports Hall of Fame. Outstanding Teams, however, are recognized annually. The selection of teams for the Society’s Honour Roll is made according to a schedule established by the Board of Directors and advice from Bruce Beacock of the Simcoe County Archives. The name of the team and their accomplishments are displayed on plagues at the Allandale Recreation Centre. A Certificate of Recognition is presented to each team member.
